Claypot Curry Murders
An Astro Shaw presentation of the Tayangan Unggul, Hadir Dinamuk production. (Worldwide sales: Astro Shaw, Selangor, Malaysia.) Created by Gayatri Su Lin Pillai, Hazil Izham Ismail. Directed, compiled by James Lee.With: Steve Yap, Darlene Goh, Mandy Chen, Olivia Kang, Pearlly Chua, Shaun Face, Wong Wai-hoong, Ernest Chong, Elvis, Sunny Pang, Alan Cheong, Kok Jia-xian. (Mandarin, Cantonese dialogue)Although inspired through the Grand Guignol recipe of "Sweeney Todd," James Lee ultimately cooks up a splattery muddle in "Claypot Curry Murders." Getting managed to move on from flavorless mellers ("Before We Fall madly in love Again"), the Malaysian author-helmer continues a dalliance with horror begun with "Histeria," with similar analyzed insufficient skill shown in the previous fest additives. Pic has not yet been launched locally because of censorship issues, but even just in more poor areas, its amateurism will limit its prospects. After finding her drunken husband sexually mistreating among her three kids, street hawker Mrs. Chew (Pearlly Chua) kills her spouse and delivers his remains to naive food-stall clients. Yarn advances forward ten years to determine that guy meat makes her wealthy, but among Chew's kids presently has a bloodlust that simply will not quit. While Lee ladles about the gore and baby cribs jokes from Tarantino, his direction is really as stiff as his lurching script, nor does the stranded thesps any favors. Pic shows exactly the same disregard for seem quality that made Lee's previous films so grating.Camera (color, DigiBeta), Mohammed Helmi Yusof editor, Chris Khoo music, Peter Foot art director, Nazrul Asraff Mahzan. Examined at PiFan Film Festival (World Fantastic Cinema), This summer 15, 2011. Running time: 97 MIN. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com
